Background of the Study
Multilingual urban centers like Lagos are characterized by linguistic diversity and dynamic language practices. In such environments, language planning becomes a complex process involving the integration of indigenous languages with global lingua francas. Yoruba, a language with deep cultural roots in Lagos, faces both opportunities and challenges in this multilingual context. Local governments, community organizations, and educational institutions have initiated language planning strategies aimed at preserving Yoruba while accommodating the demands of a cosmopolitan society (Ogunleye, 2023). These strategies include the promotion of Yoruba through media, cultural festivals, and school curricula, as well as efforts to standardize the language for formal use. The interplay between traditional practices and modern influences creates a vibrant yet challenging linguistic landscape. This study examines how language planning is conducted in Lagos with a focus on Yoruba, analyzing policy frameworks, community initiatives, and educational practices. The objective is to understand how effective language planning can foster cultural continuity and social cohesion in an urban, multilingual setting (Adegoke, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite various language planning initiatives, the effective preservation of Yoruba in Lagos remains uncertain. Challenges such as rapid urbanization, the dominance of global languages, and resource constraints hinder the successful implementation of planning strategies. Existing studies rarely address the specific mechanisms that facilitate or obstruct Yoruba language maintenance in urban contexts. This research aims to fill that gap by investigating current planning practices and their impact on Yoruba language vitality in Lagos (Ogunleye, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze current language planning strategies for Yoruba in Lagos.
To evaluate the challenges and opportunities in a multilingual urban context.
To propose recommendations for enhancing Yoruba language sustainability.
